Sapelo and Blackbeard Islands Information and Photos Sapelo Island is extremely unique because it still has a largely intact community of people that trace their roots back the the West African slaves brought to Sapelo 250 years ago. This community of Geechee descendants is called Hog Hammock. There are about 70 residents and a growing movement among them to retain their important culture. Sapelo Island also boasts the University of Georgia Marine Institute where the study of marsh ecology began, the old R.J. Reynolds Mansion, ancient Indian shell rings, miles of untouched beach, tabby ruins, and one of the oldest lighthouses in Georgia. Most of Sapelo Island is managed by the State of Georgia Department of Natural Resources. Blackbeard Island has been federally owned for almost 200 years and has beautiful old dune ridges covered in gnarly Live Oaks and Palmettos. Once used as a quarantine station, there is still an old crematorium on the north end. Besides the miles of undeveloped hiking trails, one of the most amazing features of Blackbeard Island is the beach. There are two ‘bone yard beaches’ to explore with thousands of trees eroded onto the sand. Blackbeard Island is now a National Wildlife Refuge. | |||

Taylor, Dr. Cribbs and Randall provided great learning experiences that have continued back in the classroom. Kayaking was the unanimous favorite.
